Mon, Sept 18: Off to Boston--again!!

Also known as Round #3!!

Feeling much less organized than last time.... Here is the schedule, as least as much as is known now:

Tues, 9/19, Mom and I fly USAir #970, arrive in Boston 2:51 pm. Staying at Holiday Inn--Brookline (B & B was already booked). Less than a mile to Brigham, shuttle provided.

Weds, 9/20: pre-admit testing 9:00 am, then appt with Dr. Bueno, the thoracic surgeon, at 1:15. He doesn't know yet about the two hernias!!

Thurs, 9/21: SURGERY: to be there at 6:00 am, supposed to go in about 7:30 am. Unknown how long or how extensive. Assume I will go to CCU after? Won't know until then the estimated time in-patient at Brigham. Brenda will up-date as before, and you know how thorough that was!! I'm kind of planning on 5-7 days in-patient, then staying a few days for the post-op visit before coming home.

Currently have reservations to return Mon, 10/2: depart Boston 5:00 pm, so lots of daytime for visit if release from hospital is Thurs or Friday. If, however, things go splendidly and I can come home earlier, we will change the return flight. So...warm, fuzzy, healing, positive, loving thoughts Thurs AM 7:30-10:30 or so.

Let's stick with the lilac/lavender theme: picture me wrapped in a blanket that color that is full of love from all of you. Hey, it seemed to work last time, so let's stick with a winner! Mom will be with me the whole time I am up there, my cousin-in-law Martha will be there Weds--Sun/Mon, and my cousin Fernando lives in Boston and will be around the whole time. I'm trying to give cousin Beth a break.   (Although she is standing by, bless her!)

I have been feeling really good the last few days, out and doing things. Stairs are getting easier and easier! Still get tired after several hours, but feel SO much better than last time. I think that I am definitely strong enough for this surgery. Will be using the "prepare for surgery" CD again, self-hypnosis and positive imagery with help of surgeon & anesthesia (program developed there). So, stay tuned, keep checking and keep those positive thoughts coming!

Thanks to all for your love and support, Laurie

    Laurie,

I'm sure you feel unprepared because you didn't have 4 months to plan for this one like the other 2. I will be sending positive vibes your way.

    Love,

    Katie

    9/20/06 6:42pm......

    Hi All,

I AM BACK (although I was never away)......I will continue to update the blog until our girl is better.....
I just spoke with Laurie and she had her testing done this morning and will be having the full thoracotomy, which is when they have to make a large incision between the lower ribs to get into an undamaged part, then go up the inside wall to free up the lung and "unstick" it from the chest wall, put in mesh and sew the ribs together with wire. Additionally they will probably go in another way to get to the outside of the rib cage for mesh there. While it doesn't involve her heart stopping again (unless there is a REAL problem!), it is still a pretty big surgery. She is a maintaining her spirits and will be the first surgery in the morning, which she was glad of......She also said that she ran into the "infamous Dr.Cohn while she was at the hospital today, they chatted and he told her that he would be right there with her in surgery - how do you spell RELIEF!!!!! She was very releived, should there be any problem, he can step right in and not miss a thing!

Remember the lavendar tomorrow and LOTS of prayers coz our little lady is going to be in a lot of pain for a while!!!!!

I will write more tommorrow after the surgery!

    GREAT NEWS!!!!

I just heard from Laurie's mom and she is OUT of surgery and the doctor was able to fix both hernia's! THe surgery took less time than he anticipated - he had booked the OR for 3 hours and the surgery took a little more than an hour! "Mom" and Martha will be able to see her around 11:30-12:00p today. I will update after that! THANK YOU PRAYERS and A HUGH SIGH OF RELIEF are in order here!

I am so glad to hear it! It's even better than I would have expected.

    Thanks for the quick update.
By the way, the kitties are doing well. KC seemed really happy to see me today. Chester got a bit annoyed at me when I went into the office to get the "fun" toy. But he actually enjoyed watching while KC played. After that, he started getting REALLY grumpy, so I got out as quickly as possible. >:-0
