Laurie's Heart Update

August 26, Sat: From Laurie!

Hi there everyone! It's actually me! Brenda has been doing such a great job that I allowed myself a few days before I even looked at the computer. Katie came in Weds night, did a bunch of errands, but had to leave early this morning because her grandmother was in a serious car accident. She just called me from Ohio and is on the way to the hospital.

So, the questions of the week.... I'm still very tired, doesn't take much before I'm on the couch. I nap and rest a lot, which is why I haven't been able to talk to everyone personally yet. Still quite short of breath with activity, even climbing the stairs. All normal after heart surgery. The multiple areas in my groin and neck that had catheters in them are healing beautifully. The three holes from the chest tubes look pretty nasty, I'm cleaning them and dressing them daily. The sternal incision looks great, except for about an inch at the top that isn't healing as cleanly and will scar. My chest is still pretty sore, although much improved from a week ago. I need to sleep fairly upright, so have a wedge plus pillows. Still only sleeping a couple hours at a time, any movement causes enough pain to wake me and getting in and out of bed is no picnic. Listened to my lungs this morning, and I suspect there is a pleural effusion in the right base, which is also pretty normal.

My biggest problem has become the chest wall hernia. Dr. Cohn warned me the night before surgery that he didn't think he'd be able to fix with everything else going on, and he was right. The adhesions (scar tissue) from the first surgery were much worse than he expected. There was a large area of the pericardial sack that had been removed, and both the right and left lung were stuck onto my heart. By the time he got through that, fixed the valve, etc, he didn't want to put any further strain on my heart by having me under anesthesia for longer, so had to close. (Five hour surgery, 90 mins on bypass--much improved from the ten hour surgery with 6 hours on bypass before!) Clearly he made the right decision, because then my BP went wacky, which was why I was in CCU for longer. But, since the opening between the ribs was already there (right side, from the first surgery, between 4 and 5), cutting open the sternum opened up a third side. It is normal to cough after being intubated and clearing the lungs. Unfortunately, this has caused the hernia to become much larger in the past few days. It is now visible when I cough, and about the size of a baseball as my lung comes through the opening in my chest wall. It hurts, restricts my right arm movement, affects my ability to even bend over. I will call my cardiologist down here Monday am and go from there.

Again, thank you to all who are concerned about me, praying for me and checking in. While I'm certainly through the roughest part there will be more to come....

Friday 8/18/06

FRIDAY August 18 - DAY 8 I just spoke to Laurie and she had just come back from the hosptial again, appears she had a growth around the incision that concerned her, so she had the hospital take a look at it and they told her it was "tissue remolding" nothing to really be concerned about. She is back at the B&B now and tires very quickly, which is to be expected. She is still hoping to be home in PA Tuesday or Wednesday - not certain of which day yet, will know more on Monday after she sees the doc..........I made her a little binder with all the blog updates and messages for each day from everyone and sent them overnight to her - this was the first time she had actually seen them since before she left for Boston - - SHE WAS VERY TOUCHED BY ALL THE COMMENTS AND SHE WANTED ME TO SEND YOU HER THANKS AND APPRECIATION FOR EXPRESSING THEM AND FOR KEEPING HER IN YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS - IT MEANS SO MUCH TO HER!

Sunday

Sunday Augusst 13 Day 4Hi allI spoke with Laurie about 11:30am today (it is now 7:30pm). She sounded so much better and stronger than yesterday. She had been up and to her chair and had breakfast sitting in the chair - she was preparing to have lunch, again, in the chair - not in bed! She will still be in ICU at least one day more - they are just taking such good care they don't want to take any chances so until her blood pressure is stabilized she will still be in ICU - hopefully tomorrow - but ya know whatever they say works for me - I am glad they are not rushing to put her in another space as long as she needs the care then thats what she will get!It was wonderful to hear her voice, unfortunately until she has her own room the hospital will not put calls through to her, so be patient before you try to call her. She is also requesting that no flowers be sent to her at the hospital or B&B because they would be hard to take home, (cards OK) we can bombard her with flowers/gifts when she comes home, and we will!. SHe knows you are there for her and thinking about her, and it is a GREAT comfort to her. I have told her about all the comments and the "Support of Lavendar" "AHHHH How Sweet" she said! Wendy - I will tell her about your uncle next time I talk to her!More tomorrow.

With Love and Thanks,

Brenda

Saturday

Hi guysI spoke with Laurie for the first time this morning and it was great to hear her voice! She sounded tired and weak and they are keeping her well medicated to ease the pain, but she told me that they were taking very good care of her, she was very impressed. Cousin Beth called and left me a message saying that Laurie had sat up in a chair for awhile this evening until she became uncomfortable and they had to put her back to bed. They hope to move her to a private room tomorrow, depending on how tonight goes. I will let you know more tomorrow. Please bear with me as I do not have immediate access to the computer over the weekend. However, I do update her phone message, 215-542-7069, so if you check here for an update and it is not updated, call her phone and listen to the message. I will tell you that I am very pleased with her progress so far.

Friday

Laurie had a good night last night. She is no longer intibated, She has been awake this morning, and talking and eating a little. The hospital does not have a room available for her yet, but she is ready to be moved as soon as they have one - hopefully later today! - She is resting now - I Will update more.

Brenda

Hi ALL, Greetings from Boston.I just spoke with Laurie and she's doing remarkably well. She looks good, a little swelling, but not too much. Her color is good as well. She says hello to all, and thanks for the good thoughts. Because her blood pressure is fluctuating, they will probably keep her one more night in ICU until that stablizes. Her mom, Jean, cousin Beth, and I are all here - we are now taking shifts because they want us one at a time....

Take care all,

Laurie Ellen

Day of Surgery - Update 3

This surgery is as different as night and day from the last one. I remember last time that it was about this time of night that we got to see her for the 1st time - This surgery, she is already Awake, She is Aware, She is trying to talk, AND You'll love this - SHE IS WRITING NOTES TO THE DOCS TO TELL THEM WHAT MED'S SHE WANTS!!!!She is still intibated and in intensive care, but that is Normal. Hopefully, soon she will be in her room and we will be able to really talk to her.It has been a long day, but a good one. I will update more tomorrow. Thanks again for all the prayers and love.....It worked!

Goodnight,

Brenda

Day of Surgery - Update 2

I just got off the phone with Laurie Ellen. She said that the doctor just came out and said the surgery went very well, in fact they had repaired the valve, not replaced it. This is good news! She said that the Dr. said things had gone just as planned. Thank goodness! For all of you that are familiar with her last surgery, this was not the case, so it is great that things went right for her for once. I'm sure Brenda will be posting more later, I just wanted to get this on here asap.

Katie

WE CAN ALL BREATHE A HEAVY SIGH OF RELIEF AND SAY A PRAYER OF THANKS!!!! She is out of surgery and doing well - Dr. Cohn (Bless Him) was able to repair and NOT replace the valve by putting in a different size ring he also repaired the leaflet. Did not fix the herina as he felt it was too involved for her - that's ok we will trust his judgement....I know there is more detailed information coming and I want to get that as well, right now I just want to pass on the FABULOUS NEWS!The Prayers, The Love,The Support, The Lavendar, THe Magic Hands of the Surgeon pulled her through this - I am going to go Scream for Joy and Cry!

Brenda

Day of Surgery - Update 1

I just heard from LaurieEllen and so far so good - all went well this morning preparing for surgery and she was little frightened at the end just before they took her to surgery, but all in all in VERY GOOD SPIRITS --- she is my HERO! We don't expect to hear anything more until between 12 -2pm I just wanted to let you guys know what i know when i know it! Thanks for all the lavendar support - this will make her laugh (and cry) when she reads it or when we read the comments to her - I know she can feel the Love - I sure can and I don't know many of you!

Brenda

Wednesday Update - Moved from comments

~I moved these comments to a new post so it would be easier for all the people just logging on to read without going through all the well wishes.
Katie

Hi All, 8/9 a brief update on what I have right now.Laurie and her cousin Beth left yesterday afternoon about 4pm and drove to John & Martha's in NY they arrived about 8pm. When I spoke with her they had a good trip and John had the grill going and she was preparing to have an enjoyable dinner, a nice glass of wine and a good nights rest. I have not heard from her yet today, but they were to be at the Hospital by 10:00am for pre-admit testing. I hope to hear from her shortly and when I hear anything - so will you! Stay tuned!

Laurie & Beth have arrived in Boston and had her pre testing at Brigham - all has gone well - she is checked into the B&B, her mother is there and Laurie Ellen will be arriving soonShe seems upbeat but tired. Big day tomorrow - Lets all wear lavendar tomorrow - or if you can't wear it think it along with warm cheerful and positive thoughts for her tomorrow morning at 7:30am & all thru the day....

Initial Posting

Well, it's far too late on Wedsnesday, August 2 for me to be up. But I wanted to get this set up so I could start giving out the address. My last two days at work are tomorrow and Friday. Yikes. Still have a lot to distract me as the countdown continues.... This will allow me and others to update following surgery and the few weeks after when the most stuff is likely to happen.

Here is the schedule as it stands now:

Tuesday about 3:00 my cousin Beth will arrive at my house from VA. We will then leave for my cousin John's in New York, which is about 3 hours, but we'll be driving in rush hour traffic. After sleeping over there, we will leave Weds am in order to arrive at Brigham by 1:30 for my pre-admit testing and a chest CT to look at the hernia. Don't know if check in at the B & B before or after. My Mom is flying into Boston Weds afternoon, as is my close friend and former college roommate, Laurie Ellen. They will be picked up by my cousin Johnny and his son Fernando. Beth, Mom, Laurie Ellen and I will stay Weds night at the B & B, but have to arrive at Brigham at 5:30 AM on Thursday, August 10.

Surgery is scheduled for about 7:30 AM. Dr. Lawrence Cohn is not sure yet whether he will be able to repair or will have to replace the valve, so unknown surgery or bypass time. The thoracic surgeon will be in near the end of the surgery to see and evaluate the repair of the hernia, but he doesn't think he will be able to fix it since it is probably stuck on the chest wall and would bleed if he tried to get it off, which would not be good with all the blood thinners in my system. Hopefully he will be able to at least suture the ribs together so that my lung will stop emerging from my chest when I laugh or cough. If everything goes perfectly, after surgery on 8/10, CCU and tele, I would be discharged on the 15th. My mother will fly back the same day, so then it would be Beth and I at the B & B (Laurie Ellen will leave Saturday). On 8/18 I have my post-op visit with Dr. Cohn, and could leave after that. Beth and I would then reverse the process, drive to NY, stay over, then on to Penna the next day.

So, best case scenario, I will be home on Saturday, 8/19. Unknown when I will be able to drive until we see what they do, but at least four weeks. So, that's the general schedule of events. I will be checking this until sometime on Tues, when I leave. My dear friend Brenda will be updating this the day of the surgery and while I am in Boston. Thanks for reading!
