Laurie's Heart Update

Initial Posting

Well, it's far too late on Wedsnesday, August 2 for me to be up. But I wanted to get this set up so I could start giving out the address. My last two days at work are tomorrow and Friday. Yikes. Still have a lot to distract me as the countdown continues.... This will allow me and others to update following surgery and the few weeks after when the most stuff is likely to happen.

Here is the schedule as it stands now:

Tuesday about 3:00 my cousin Beth will arrive at my house from VA. We will then leave for my cousin John's in New York, which is about 3 hours, but we'll be driving in rush hour traffic. After sleeping over there, we will leave Weds am in order to arrive at Brigham by 1:30 for my pre-admit testing and a chest CT to look at the hernia. Don't know if check in at the B & B before or after. My Mom is flying into Boston Weds afternoon, as is my close friend and former college roommate, Laurie Ellen. They will be picked up by my cousin Johnny and his son Fernando. Beth, Mom, Laurie Ellen and I will stay Weds night at the B & B, but have to arrive at Brigham at 5:30 AM on Thursday, August 10.

Surgery is scheduled for about 7:30 AM. Dr. Lawrence Cohn is not sure yet whether he will be able to repair or will have to replace the valve, so unknown surgery or bypass time. The thoracic surgeon will be in near the end of the surgery to see and evaluate the repair of the hernia, but he doesn't think he will be able to fix it since it is probably stuck on the chest wall and would bleed if he tried to get it off, which would not be good with all the blood thinners in my system. Hopefully he will be able to at least suture the ribs together so that my lung will stop emerging from my chest when I laugh or cough. If everything goes perfectly, after surgery on 8/10, CCU and tele, I would be discharged on the 15th. My mother will fly back the same day, so then it would be Beth and I at the B & B (Laurie Ellen will leave Saturday). On 8/18 I have my post-op visit with Dr. Cohn, and could leave after that. Beth and I would then reverse the process, drive to NY, stay over, then on to Penna the next day.

So, best case scenario, I will be home on Saturday, 8/19. Unknown when I will be able to drive until we see what they do, but at least four weeks. So, that's the general schedule of events. I will be checking this until sometime on Tues, when I leave. My dear friend Brenda will be updating this the day of the surgery and while I am in Boston. Thanks for reading!

OK, Laurie... What do you want to change? I made it so anyone can post. This is the same setup as my blog. I can also put links on your blog to things like Brigham hospital, or if you have an amazon wishlist we could put that on here in case anyone wants to send you a get well gift, like a book or cd or dvd or something. Call me and I'll walk you through how to do all of this. It is SUPER easy. I also deleted your comment and added it to your inital post. :o)

    Love ya,

    Katie

Thank you SO much to Katie for setting this up so well. The links to Cohn and Brigham are a great touch! It's Sunday night, and I remain amazingly calm. But whenever someone else starts to cry that sets me off! Still have a lot of stuff to get done before I leave Tues afternoon, which certainly helps to keep me distracted. Several requests for addresses, so here they are:
My house: 89 Harlow Circle, Ambler, PA 19002
Brigham & Women's Hospital, 75 Francis Street, Boston, MA 02115
Coolidge Corner Guest House, 17 Littell Road, Brookline, MA 02146
The Guest House (B & B) is probably the best place to send cards, because I'll be there longer. Thanks again for everyone's help and good wishes.

To all: It's wonderful to see the comments. Have also had several to my e-mail addresses as well. Please leave names--after coming off the bypass last time it took weeks to be less fuzzy--thinking clearly took months! For those coming late to the party, the problem is my mitral valve. It deteriorated rapidly in 2004, and this problem is a result of that surgery. The front leaflet flips over during systole (squeezing) of the heart, so less blood gets out and pressure backs up into my lungs, causing CHF. But it's so wonderful to hear from people that I haven't had a chance to catch up with in a while and know that they still think fondly of me! Thanks to Kevan Williams for posting on the EMS site. I know I kind of fell off the face of the earth, but now you know why. The first surgery was 10/15/04, and I had hoped to return to EMS after that, but never felt good. Doubt I will ever be able to now. Took a while to find the diagnosis, but I never did things the usual way! Up very early today: 5:45 am. Couldn't sleep with all that needs to be done before leaving for the first leg of the trip to NY and John & Martha's. The rewards are multiple: seeing them, Lyle and Emma, plus the grilled steak and corn on the cob! The only change in schedule so far is that pre-admit has become less co-operative, and I now need to be there 8/9 by 11:30 am, so Beth and I will have to leave by 7:30 am from NY to get there. My former EMT partner at 122, Joanne Shuttleworth, is coming over today to do some last minute running around, lifting and carrying for me. I get fatigued and short of breath very easily, so move slowly and everything takes longer. I doubt that I will be able to personally update tomorrow am, hope my cousin Fernando has a laptop in Boston. I'm still very calm, and mostly just want this all to be over. Listening to my relaxation CD, which will be on during the surgery with headphones as well. Lots of positive imagery to focus on! It helps so much to know so many people are thinking of me and sending love and positive energy. Thanks to all for your support. Others will update if I am unable. Off to pack. Trying to leave time enough for a pedicure--at least my toes will look good!

OK, it's just 2:00 pm, Beth will be here in about an hour. I'm packed, my toes are a lovely shade of lavender, I've eaten, cut the cat's toenails, spare batteries for the CD player.... Joanne's going to do all my errands because, as she pointed out, I get out of breath walking to the car. OH--good news: one of my contacts is a research cardiologist up at Mass General who wrote an article about my diagnosis in 1999. When I told him when I was going to be at Brigham, he asked if I would be willing to participate in a study to find the genetic link to MVP (Mitral Valve Prolapse), which is what this originally was. So the geneticist is coming to the hospital tomorrow during my pre-admit stuff to get blood and consents signed so that they will preserve my valve tissue in a way that will allow them to look for the bad genome. I'm terrifically excited that my blood and valve/valve tissue may help to discover the cause--the silver lining in the big black cloud! So, resting now, and then leaving. BYE!

    Hi All, 8/9
a brief update on what I have right now.

Laurie and her aunt Beth left yesterday afternoon about 4pm and drove to John & Martha's in NY they arrived about 8pm. When I spoke with her they had a good trip and John had the grill going and she was preparing to have an enjoyable dinner, a nice glass of wine and a good nights rest.

I have not heard from her yet today, but they were to be at the Hospital by 10:00am for pre-admit testing. I hope to hear from her shortly and when I hear anything - so will you! Stay tuned!

To my very courageous cousin Laurie, in Italy they say "in bocca al lupo" (which means 'in the mouth of the wolf') and then Laurie answers "crepi" (which means 'may the wolf die')...that's my contribution because I don't know what all this 'lavender' stuff is all about! Best of luck from Bologna, Susan, Fabio, Mirko and Emily

You are in my prayers and on my prayer chain at my church. Actually, I pray for the surgeons also. Hope all goes well!
